Thousands of pounds of premium, live Newfoundland and Labrador lobster took off from Gander International Airport this week aboard a FarCargo Boeing 757-233, destined for Madrid, Spain. The flight marks a major milestone in a bold new strategy to diversify seafood markets amid global trade headwinds.

Premium, live, cold-water lobster (the kind that’s earned a global reputation as the world’s best) were carefully prepped and packed by the Gander team before takeoff. Within hours, that same catch will be featured on menus in Spain, demonstrating how air cargo can bridge oceans and deliver premium Newfoundland and Labrador seafood to international buyers in record time.

This shipment is part of an initiative to expand markets globally and in response to the current global geopolitical climate. It is the result of more than two years of planning and collaboration between public and private partners — a model for what’s possible when different sectors work together toward a common goal.

Led by PF Collins International Trade Solutions, Whitecap International Seafood Exporters, Eastern Fish Markets Ltd., Happy Adventure Sea Products (1991) Ltd., the Gander International Airport Authority (GIAA), Allied Aviation Services Company, Hardy Fish Co Ltd., and other seafood industry leaders, the new seafood air cargo and market diversification project is setting a foundation for sustainable global reach. Closely aligned with the long-term vision of establishing Gander as a seafood export hub, the initiative provides vital and immediate support in process development, logistics coordination, international marketing, and strategic sales planning.

Darrell Roche, President and CEO at Whitecap, noted that the project was 2 years in the making, and the success of the inaugural flight was a proud day for everyone at Whitecap and its many partners.

“The success of this project is a result of dedication and perseverance by numerous companies and funding agencies who trusted us and believed in this project. Without the support of those funding agencies, none of this would have happened.”

Roche emphasized the role of close collaboration and geography in the success of the project.

“We have demonstrated to our European customers that they will receive the highest quality product from us. Without Bob Hardy’s persistence, experience and encouragement, we would not have stayed with this project. His support was instrumental,” Roche said.

Whitecap would also like to recognize their partner and customers in Spain that have been instrumental in guiding the project.

While the project’s start was considered a success, Roche emphasized that the real work starts now.

Mark Wheaton, General Manager of Eastern Fish Markets, underscored the launch’s importance in shaping the province’s identity in the global seafood industry.

“It’s a milestone for the Newfoundland and Labrador Lobster fishery – the beginning of finally selling Newfoundland and Labrador Lobster as ‘Newfoundland and Labrador Lobster’ and not having our lobster branded as someone else’s once we sell it. To the harvesters that continue to support Eastern Fish Markets with Grade A quality lobster, my hat is off to every single one. Without this product, this could not have been possible.”

Eastern Fish Markets specialize in premium Newfoundland & Labrador wild lobster sourced from first-class harvesters who ensure superior quality.

“Our team of harvesters source these animals from the cold, clean waters of the North Atlantic, which are considered to be one of the healthiest ocean habitats in the world. We are committed to community values, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability, emphasizing careful handling of live harvest to maintain quality.”

Raymond Collins, President of PF Collins, stressed the importance of speed and precision in maintaining that quality.

“When global trade shifts overnight, the only solution is to move faster. This project gives our seafood exporters a direct runway to premium international markets. PF Collins is proud to support the logistics planning, aircraft bookings, and freight forwarding documentation that help get our province’s top-tier seafood into the hands of global buyers quickly and efficiently.”

Roche added that this project is a powerful example of how public and private sectors can work together to achieve a common goal. The project partners acknowledge the valuable advice and support of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, the Atlantic Fisheries Fund, the Department of Industry, Energy and Technology, and the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture.

“Every participating partner played an essential role in turning this vision into reality, and the project stands as a model for future collaborations focused on sustainability, innovation, and economic growth,” he said.

While the inaugural flight was focused on lobster destined for the Spanish market, the broader strategy includes expansion into France, the United Kingdom, and eventually, high-value Asian markets like South Korea and Japan. This plan not only provides short-term protection for Newfoundland and Labrador’s seafood industry but also creates the opportunity for the province to establish long-lasting, resilient trade corridors for the years ahead. The consortium looks forward to delivering premium-quality, fresh North Atlantic cod from Newfoundland and Labrador to many customers across Europe this fall.

As the Gander seafood hub continues to evolve, the success of this pilot project marks the beginning of a new chapter – one where Newfoundland and Labrador seafood is no longer just ocean-harvested, but also runway-ready.

In PF Collins’ 40+ years of providing warehousing and crating services, we have made thousands of wooden crates for domestic and international shipments. From large offshore oilfield equipment to a time machine movie prop, we’ve packaged it all. But none were as special as the crate we recently made for our new friend Killick, a Newfoundland dog travelling to Alberta with his family.

Travel Delay

In making their travel plans, Killick’s owners decided to drive to Alberta but hoped to make the trip a little shorter for Killick by flying him on Air Canada. Upon arrival to see him off at St. John’s International Airport, they discovered that his dog carrier did not meet the specifications for air travel. For air transport, airlines require that animals have enough space to turn around while standing, to stand and sit straight, and to lie in a natural position. Killick’s carrier did not meet the requirements for his size and, therefore, he was grounded.

Enter PF Collins

As Killick’s owners and the Customer Service Agent tried to come up with an alternative solution, one of PF Collins’ Drivers happened to be picking up cargo and overheard the conversation at the Air Canada counter. He suggested the owners contact his Manager to find out if PF Collins could build a crate that would meet Air Canada’s regulations and ensure Killick’s comfort and safety.

Upon receiving the call, along with dimensions and pictures of a small wooden carrier to be used as a template, PF Collins’ Warehouse Manager asked the Materials Handlers to build a custom crate.

Building Killick’s Custom Carrier

To meet Air Canada’s specifications, the crate required specific materials, including half-inch plywood, wire mesh, hinges, and locks. Furthermore, due to Killick’s size, considerable ventilation was needed. Holes were drilled in the plywood and mesh was cut to exact measurements. Markings were also applied to meet air transport regulations.

The biggest challenge to constructing the carrier was adding enough structural framing to support a very large and heavy Newfoundland dog while meeting the airline’s height and width restrictions. Killick would need to be secure, safe, and comfortable during loading, offloading, and while in-transit. He would also have to endure a stopover and overnight in Toronto.

Final Approval

Once the carrier was finished, pictures and dimensions were forwarded to Air Canada to confirm that it met their requirements. It did, and once final approval was received, PF Collins delivered the crate to Air Canada in preparation for Killick’s trip.

Before embarking on his journey in his new carrier, Killick and his owners dropped by to say thanks to our Warehouse team for their help. Another satisfied customer!

Flower Logistics and The Daffodil Campaign

Every April, the Canadian Cancer Society holds their annual daffodil campaign to honour Canadians who have been affected by cancer and to raise money in support of research, education, advocacy, and care initiatives. Millions of daffodils are distributed for sale through grocery stores and other retail outlets. But have you ever wondered where all the flowers come from and how they get here?

Behind the daffodil campaign are months of flower logistics and freight planning to ensure fresh flowers arrive in cities and towns across Canada in time for Daffodil Month. We give you a look inside the logistics behind the campaign below.

Logistics Planning

It may be a surprise to learn that the journey of many of these daffodils begins in the United Kingdom. The world’s largest producer of daffodils, the Canadian Cancer Society has established a long-standing relationship with a UK grower.

As the flowers are planted and begin to grow, logistics planning for transportation and distribution is well underway. Highly perishable, the daffodils are shipped from the UK and distributed throughout Canada. All within a time frame of approximately 24-48 hours.

Travelling thousands of miles, the transportation of perishable goods, such as fresh-cut flowers, requires a “cold chain”. A continuous, temperature-controlled supply chain, the cold chain preserves the flowers until they reach their final destination. The daffodils require multiple cold chain transport modes and storage facilities.

Harvesting & Shipping

The journey begins with the harvesting of the daffodils by the grower in the UK. After the flowers are cut, they are pre-chilled (to prevent bloom) and packed before being shipped by refrigerated truck to Heathrow Airport. They are then loaded onto direct flights to major Canadian hubs (e.g. Montreal, Halifax, etc.).

Temperature control is critical when moving perishables. As such, data loggers monitor and control temperatures to keep the flowers between 1-3 degrees Celsius while in transit.

Upon arrival to Canada, the flowers are cleared through Canadian customs and offloaded into refrigerated trucks destined to dedicated storage facilities within each Province. From these facilities, the daffodils are distributed to volunteers, corporate clients, and retail locations for public purchase.
